GZPD

GZPD is an AR simulation campaign that empowers its participants to role play as special police to maintain stability. It aims at discussing civil rights, public power on administration, and the balance between privacy and public security by allowing players to reassess how ubiquitous surveillance impact daily life.

The campaign enables players to get a full picture of the stability system by experiencing how police use their positions and public big data system to fulfil missions like patrolling, arresting, and maintaining stability on real sites.

Background Info

Should we, the citizens, be proud of the growing stability budget and cutting-edge surveillance device? Does the invention of that equipment introduce a safer society? Or, does it just look safer? Do those devices deter thieves and criminals only? Have our rights been truly secured?

Research Development

1.Initially, the research was carried on from the perspective of personal information leaks with an emphasis on smart home devices. At that time, I collected information on where user’s data go and question why those who claimed their data were safe did many unsecured things.

2.In the second phase, the hidden privacy problem of smart speakers became the focus. After studying the activation mechanism of smart speakers, a proposal was made about controlling the activation of smart speakers to prevent the device from being turned on without the user’s consent.

3.Thirdly, the root cause of privacy issues in China was discussed. In this part, the discussion scope extended to the surveillance devices that could be found everywhere because in China company information was under the government’s control. This time, the research questioned whether personal data could be shown in quantitative measurements like carbon footprints.

4.In the last stage, I looked for a way to present. I wonder how to capture data if it was a kind of footprint? Could data be presented in a game for many more people to engage in? Of all these wonderings, I decided to present from the perspective of police whose responsibility was stability maintenance.

Setting

Background

Set in the near future, China has formed a large number of Maintain Stability Police, using big data to monitor citizens. The location takes place in Guangzhou, China.

Mechanism

In the campaign, the player would portray a young unemployed graduate. With the help of his family, he took a temporary job working as police to maintain stability. Taking advantage of the police’s position and public big data system, the player was able to experience how police carried missions such as patrolling, arresting and maintaining stability.

Test Flight

Pick & Build up

Take out the device from the pelican box, and then put the phone in it. You will become a member of GZPD. Before the start, you can learn how to operate through the built-in guidance, and then wait for the command from your boss. Here I will briefly demonstrate several major functions.

1.jpg

Scan & Read

It all begAfter arriving at the designated spot, you can turn on the AR and scan the avatar to view their information.

2.jpg

Map & Chase

The map uses real locations to provide players with virtual moving targets and virtual teammates.

3.jpg

Control the Cams

After reaching a specific site, you can turn on AR and scan these CAMs. Oh! These CAMs are real.

Demo

These designs concerning social problems would not lead to the final blueprint, but are more likely to be catalysts and pivots with the ultimate goal to influence people's thoughts.

Feedbacks from Some Testees

“Privacy isn’t about hiding bad things. It’s about protecting what defines us as human beings: our personality, our fears, our relationships, and our vulnerabilities.”

“People think they are walking on the street in clothes, but they don’t know that “some people” can see through your whole body with glasses, without privacy. There are also classes in this group. The more advanced the glasses, the more they can see . Some people may disagree and think it's just a "small group of people", but when converted to a large base, you are no doubt running naked. Do we have the right to take off these people's glasses?”

“The whole world may suffer from privacy being monitored, while China is used to strengthen totalitarian rule, control freedom of speech, and has a ‘Great Firewall’. Information on stability maintenance and monitoring is very scarce, and Chinese are very numb to this.”
